Check your plan before January 1
Read your plan's drug list for next year during open enrollment, not after. Look for three things: whether the drug is on the list at all, whether it needs a prior authorization, and whether weight loss is excluded as a use. A drug covered for type 2 diabetes can still be excluded for weight loss on the same plan.
If the plan denies or drops it
You can ask the plan for an internal appeal and, if that fails, an external review by an independent reviewer. Ask your prescriber for a letter that names the diagnosis, your BMI history and the other treatments you have tried. If the plan dropped the drug for everyone, an appeal rarely wins, and the cash routes above are the fallback.
Paying cash while you appeal
A month of cash while an appeal runs keeps you on the drug. Many readers move to a compounded version or the maker's direct price for a few months and go back to the plan if the appeal wins. HSA and FSA money can usually pay for a prescribed GLP-1.
