Questions people ask

How much do GLP-1 meds cost without insurance?
Cash prices run from about $150 a month for compounded options up to $1,300 or more for branded Wegovy or Zepbound at retail. The chart at the top shows the lowest we track for each.
Is compounded semaglutide safe and legal?
It is legal when a licensed compounding pharmacy (known as a 503A facility) compounds it against a valid prescription. It is the same molecule as Wegovy, but it is not FDA-approved as a finished product and is not held to the same manufacturing oversight, so quality depends on the pharmacy you use. Read the full explainer.
What's the difference between Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro?
Wegovy and Ozempic are both semaglutide from Novo Nordisk: Wegovy is approved for weight loss, Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. Mounjaro is tirzepatide from Eli Lilly, which acts on two gut hormones instead of one and has shown larger average weight loss in trials; its weight-loss version is Zepbound. Compare all GLP-1 medications.
Will insurance or Medicare cover it?
Coverage climbs with employer size: 43 percent of the largest firms (5,000+ workers) cover Wegovy or Zepbound for obesity per KFF's 2025 survey, and prior authorization is almost always required. Small-employer and individual plans cover it at lower rates. Medicaid varies by state. Original Medicare does not cover GLP-1s for weight loss alone, but some plans cover them for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular risk. For your specific insurer, see payer coverage pages. Full breakdown of insurance, HSA and FSA paths.
Do I need a prescription first?
No. Every program on the chart includes the visit that gets you the prescription: you complete an online questionnaire or a video visit with a licensed clinician, who prescribes if you qualify. You do not need to bring an existing prescription.
