Does Ozempic have a generic brand? No FDA-approved generic exists in 2026

No. There is no FDA-approved generic for Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound. Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) sits under patents that run to roughly 2031 to 2032. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) runs to about 2036, per drugs.com and Healthline. Anything sold online as "generic Ozempic" is either compounded semaglutide, a pharmacy-made version that is not FDA-approved and is not Wegovy or Ozempic, or a counterfeit.

Health Canada approved a generic Ozempic from Sandoz

Sandoz Canada announced the approval on September 18, 2026. The drug is a once-weekly injection for adults with type 2 diabetes, in pens that deliver 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg doses. Sandoz gave no launch date and no price. Health Canada had already approved two generics from Apotex: one for type 2 diabetes on May 1, 2026, and Sevmia, a generic Wegovy for weight loss, on June 29.

In the US, the FDA gave a generic semaglutide from Apotex tentative approval on April 7, 2026. Tentative approval does not let Apotex sell it. Why there is no generic yet

A generic is an FDA-approved copy the agency clears only after the brand's patents expire and the maker proves its version matches. That approval does not exist here. drugs.com lists no generic Ozempic. Novo Nordisk's semaglutide patents run to about 2031 to 2032, and Lilly's tirzepatide to about 2036. One drugmaker has filed for a generic tirzepatide, and Healthline reports it is under review, but under review is not approved, and Lilly is contesting it.

What "generic Ozempic" online actually is

Two different things hide behind the phrase. Compounded semaglutide is the real molecule mixed to order by a pharmacy under a prescription. It can feel like a generic, but it is not FDA-approved and its quality rides on the pharmacy that makes it. This is the legitimate low-cost route, $149 to $199 a month. Counterfeit is the other one: vials shipped from overseas sellers with no prescription and no pharmacy behind them. The FDA has seized counterfeit semaglutide and warns it can carry the wrong dose or the wrong substance. A price that looks too good from a site that ships without a prescription is the tell.

The real cheapest route

If the draw of a "generic" is the low price, a real version already exists, and it is not a generic. Compounded semaglutide is the floor: $149 a month at Strut Health and $199 all-in at Shed. The manufacturers also sell cheaper cash options that skip the counterfeit risk. LillyDirect sells Zepbound vials for $299 to $449. Set those against the $1,000 to $1,350 a month brand Ozempic or Wegovy costs at retail, and you can see why people go looking.
