Covered for diabetes, not for weight loss

Many plans cover a GLP-1 for type 2 diabetes and exclude it for weight loss. Ozempic and Mounjaro carry the diabetes approval; Wegovy and Zepbound, the same molecules at weight-loss doses, carry the weight-loss approval. Your diagnosis on the prescription decides which rules apply.

Free-drug programs

The makers run patient assistance programs for people with low income and no coverage. They cover the diabetes brands, not the weight-loss brands. Our guide lists the income limits and how to apply.

Medicare and Medicaid

Medicare Part D and Medicaid cover GLP-1s for type 2 diabetes. Medicaid cover for weight loss varies by state.
