VA rules checked November 4, 2026

Does the VA cover Wegovy or Zepbound?

Yes, for some veterans. VA's April 2026 criteria let a VA clinician prescribe Wegovy or Zepbound for weight management when your BMI is 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition and you have a record of a lifestyle program such as MOVE! in the past year.

What VA asks for

Both VA documents (Wegovy, revised April 2026; Zepbound, revised April 2026) list two things you must meet:

  1. A lifestyle program record. Documented participation in a comprehensive lifestyle intervention covering diet, physical activity and behavior. VA says one occasion or visit in the past year makes a veteran eligible for consideration, and names MOVE! as one example.
  2. BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition.VA's examples include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease (MASLD) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Both documents also list reasons VA will not prescribe them for weight, among them pregnancy, breastfeeding, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, severe gastroparesis and some eye disease in diabetes. Your VA clinician reads the full list with you.

What it costs at the VA

SupplyBrand-name copay (tier 3)
Up to 30 days$11
31 to 60 days$22
61 to 90 days$33

Copays stop once you have been charged $700 in a calendar year. Priority group 1 pays no medication copays. Rates from VA's copay page, effective January 1, 2026, read November 4, 2026. VA sets the tier for each drug.

How veterans get it

  1. Weight management starts with the VA primary care team, which runs MOVE!.
  2. VA counts one lifestyle program visit in the past year as enough to be considered.
  3. The VA clinician checks the Wegovy or Zepbound criteria for use.
  4. If the answer is no, the missing item is often the lifestyle program record. VA sends exceptions to the local facility's P&T committee.

If you pay cash instead

Some veterans pay cash while they wait or when they do not meet VA's rules. The cash programs at the top of this page print their monthly prices. Brand cash prices from the makers are on GLP-1 without insurance, and every program is on the GLP Chart price chart. Military families on TRICARE should read the TRICARE GLP-1 coverage page.

VA GLP-1 FAQ

Does the VA cover Wegovy for weight loss?

VA publishes criteria for use for Wegovy for chronic weight management, revised April 2026. A veteran meets them with a BMI of 27 or more, at least one weight-related condition, documented participation in a comprehensive lifestyle program such as MOVE! in the past year, and none of the listed exclusions. A VA clinician prescribes it.

Does the VA cover Zepbound?

Yes, under the same kind of criteria. VA's April 2026 Zepbound document asks for the same BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition and the same lifestyle program record.

Does the VA cover the Wegovy pill?

VA's April 2026 Wegovy document covers both the injection and the oral tablet for weight management.

What does a GLP-1 cost at the VA?

VA's 2026 copay page puts brand-name prescription medicines in tier 3: $11 for up to a 30-day supply, $22 for 31 to 60 days and $33 for 61 to 90 days. Copays stop at $700 a calendar year. Priority group 1 pays no medication copays. (VA copay page, read November 4, 2026.)

What if my VA clinic says no?

VA's documents say exceptions are decided at the local facility under its P&T committee and pharmacy services policies. Ask your VA clinician what is missing (most often the lifestyle program record). If you choose to pay cash instead, the programs below print their prices.

Is CHAMPVA or TRICARE the same?

No. This page covers VA health care for veterans. TRICARE (active duty, retirees and families) has its own rules, on our TRICARE page. CHAMPVA has its own rules too; ask CHAMPVA before you count on coverage.
